The Modern School Movement

Between 1910 and 1960 an alternative educational movement was affirmed through diverse experiences in schools where children studied in an environment of freedom and self-sufficiency.

These Modern Schools contracted with the traditional, authorial and disciplinary school: The Modern School Movement.

It not only seeks to create a new type of school, but seeks to create a type of school based on volunteerism, cooperation and individual freedom.

The Modern School Movement is currently an association of teachers and education professionals working in countries under the supervision of the International Federation of Modern School Movements, created in 1966.

In Portugal the association is formed in 1976, following of the democratic revolution of April. The Pedagogy is based on the pedagogy of Célestin Freinet, a French pedagogue who developed a method of education based on individual student work, group work, contact with the school environment that develops through projects and the application of democratic rules in the functioning of the classroom. The libertarian influence of the Chage movement via Francisco Ferrer, the failed Catalan libertarian militant. In USA the mouvement had been influenced y Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger, Alexander Berkman and Man Ray
