Orlando Fals Borda was a Colombian sociologist, advocate for participatory action research processes. He was one of the founders of the participatory sociology courses in Latin America, together with Fr Camilo Torres Restrepo in 1959.

His thinking seeks to address the issues of the margins of knowledge, borders and peripheries, seeking to analyze the issues of subordination of colonized societies in America. For Fals Borda the subversion of thought It is an ethical stance, which he called “positive subversion” (part of the idea of ​​commitment to action.) He was a thinker who will influence Postcolonial Studies and Decoloniality approaches. In the field of education, he defended Popular Education as a tool for the construction of modernity in southern spaces.

His analytical posture can be summarized in the following quote:
“Do not monopolize your knowledge or arrogantly impose your technique, but respect and match your skills with the knowledge of the researched or grassroots communities, taking them as full partners and co-researchers. Do not trust the elitist versions of history and science that answer dominant interests, but be receptive to counter-narratives and try to recapture them. Not only depend on your culture to interpret facts, but reclaim local values, characteristics, beliefs and arts for action by and with research organizations. Impose your own thoughtful scientific style on communicating results, but spread and share what you have learned with people in a totally understandable and even literary and enjoyable way, for science should not necessarily be a mystery or a monopoly of experts and intellectuals.
